Proclaimed himself ruler at Kandahar, on his father’s death, 1793. Fled with his father-in-law to Balushistan when his troops were persuaded to accept Zaman Shah as ruler. Returned during Zaman Shah’s absence from the country in 1795, retook Kandahar and proclaimed himself ruler of Afghanistan. Again thwarted by Payinda Khan, who persuaded his army to abandon his cause. Fled to Farah and then towards Baluchistan, when he was captured by Muhammad Khan Sadozai in December 1795 at Leiah, near Dera Ismal Khan. Blinded and sent as a prisoner to Kabul. m. a daughter of a daughter of Sardar Mehr ‘Ali Khan Ishaqzai, Shah Pesand Khan, sometime Mir Akhorbashi. He had issue, three sons:

- 21) H.R.H. Shahzada Haji Firuz ud-din Mirza (s/o Haji Jamal Khan Barakzai’s daughter), educ. privately. Lived in Yazd for many years as an exile. Governor of Herat 1800-1816, in exile at Mashhad 1816-1823, returned and attempted to seize control of Herat with Persian help in 1823, but defeated and imprisoned. Freed and proclaimed ruler but deposed after a “reign” of eighteen days. He had issue, four sons:
- a) Shahzada Malik Qasim Mirza. Served under Crown Prince Abbas Mirza in the Herat campaign 1833, when he was attacked by some Turkomans, taken to Khiva and sold as a slave. Freed by the Khan of Khiva, who gave him a village for his maintenance, but never permitted to leave. m. before 1816, his first cousin, H.R.H. Shahzadi Ruqiya Begum, daughter of H.M. Inayat-i-Ilahi Padshah-i-Adl Gustar Khusrawi ‘Alam Panah Mazhar-i-Lutfu’llah Zill-i-Haq Mahmud Shah Dur-i-Durran, Shah of Afghanistan. He d. at Khiva, 1840, having had issue, five sons:
- i) Shahzada Muhammad Yusuf Mirza. He deposed the Alakozai governor and was proclaimed as Governor of Herat, 15th September 1855. Besieged by an army sent by the Shah of Persia in April 1856, he was arrested by his own vizier and sent as a prisoner to the Persians on 29th April 1856, who sent him on to Tehran. Imprisoned in the Aumbar and later the Topkhana prisons. m. before 25th October 1856, the widow of Sardar Said Muhammad Khan Alakozai (k. at Herat, 15th September 1855), Governor of Herat. He was k. (hacked to pieces) by the relatives of Said Muhammad, on a mound outside the Kasr-i-Qajar Palace, Tehran, 11th April 1857.
- iii) Shahzada Muhammad Reza Mirza. Sent as a hostage by his brother to the Persian in March 1856, who later sent him on to Tehran.
- ii) Shahzada Masud Mirza.
- iii) Shahzada Muhammad Ismail Mirza.
- iv) Shahzada Shahrukh Mirza. He had issue:

He joined the British during the First Afghan War, raising a force of 150 horse and 200 foot by mortgaging his properties, then serving with them under Colonel Wade. Extra Assist Cmsnr of Kohat 1849-1869. Granted a khilat valued at Rs 2,500 and his jagir of Rs 2,300 p.a. confirmed in perpetuity. Rcvd: Mutiny medal (1858). m. a sister of Atau’llah Khan. Served with distinction during the Indian Mutiny in 1857-1858. He d. from cholera, at Kohat, 1869, having had issue, seven sons:
- (1) Shahzada Muhammad Taifur, educ. privately. Served with distinction during the Indian Mutiny 1857-1858 when he joined his brother in raising a troop of 100 horse to guard the Ganges Ferries. Rcvd: Mutiny medal (1858). He d. before 1883.
- (2) Shahzada Sir Muhammad Sultan Jan, KCIE (1.1.1904, CIE, 24.5.1881). b. at Peshawar, Punjab, 1840, educ. privately. Served with distinction during the Indian Mutiny 1857-1858 when he joined his brother in raising a troop of 100 horse to guard the Ganges Ferries, later making a brilliant charge against the enemy guns at Mirganj, near Bareilly. He later served during the Uthma-khel expedition in 1866, the blockade of the Kohat Pass 1876, and the Jowaki campaign in 1878. Tahsildar for the districts of Peshawar and Kohat 1860-1872, Extra Assist Cmsnr at Kohat 1872-1878, Political Officer Khurram Valley 1878-1879, Governor of Khost 1879-1880, Assist to the Cmsnr at Khurram 1880. Granted a khilat valued at Rs 500 in 1858, and an additional jagir worth Rs 1,000 at Kohat in June 1881, and two further khilat valued of Rs 1,500 in 1885. The value of the original jagir was later converted to an annual cash grant of Rs 5,000 p.a. Rcvd: Mutiny (1858), KIH silver (1877), Afghanistan (1881), and Delhi Durbar silver (1903) medals. m. a daughter of his cousin, Shahzada Kamyab. He had issue, one son:
- (a) Shahzada Mir Alam. b. at Kohat, 1858. Deputy Inspector of Police at Bannu.
- (3) Shahzada Muhammad Azim. b. at Peshawar, Punjab, 1843, educ. privately. Dafadar Corps of Guides.
- (4) Shahzada Muhammad Shuaib Jan. b. at Peshawar, Punjab, 1848, educ. privately. Inspector of Police at Peshawar, served in the Second Afghan War on the Khyber Line. Rcvd: Afghanistan medal (1881). He had issue, a son:
