  • 1879  H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Yaqub Khan, Amir of Afghanistan and its dependencies. b. 1849, third son of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Sher 'Ali Khan, Amir of Afghanistan, by his wife, Maryam Begum, educ. privately. Governor of Herat 1863-1866 and 1871-1874, and of Kabul 1878-1879. Regent at Kabul March 1869. Rebelled and fled to Persia, February 1871. Proclaimed ruler 21st February 1879. Installed April 1879, but compelled to abdicate 28th October 1879. Placed under confinement by the British 24th December 1879. m.     • 1) Crown Prince Muhammad Musa Jan. b. 1868 (s/o Ruqaiya Begum). Amir of Ghuzni 24th December 1879-21st April 1880. Lived in exile in India 1880-1947. m. (first) Masuma Begum, eldest daughter of Sardar Sher Muhammad Khan. m. (second) a daughter of Sardar 'Abdu'l Salam Khan, sometime Chief Justice of Afghanistan. He d. at Kabul, 1951, having had issue, one son and four daughters:
      • a) Sardar Muhammad 'Ali Khan Sherzai (s/o Masuma), educ. Cambridge Univ. Chief of Protocol in the MFA 1953-1964. m. Benazir Begum, second daughter of General H.H. Sardar Muhammad Sulaiman Khan, sometime Governor of Herat and Badakhshan, by his wife, Taj Sultana Begum, daughter of Colonel Sardar Muhammad Yusuf Khan. He d. 1971, having had issue, a daughter:

      • a) Saleha Begum [Shah Gul] (d/o Masuma). m. Major-General H.E. Sardar 'Ali Shah Khan Sulaiman (b. 1900), GOC Southern provinces, second son of General H.H. Sardar Muhammad Sulaiman Khan, sometime Governor of Herat and Badakhshan, by his wife, Taj Sultana Begum, daughter of Colonel Sardar Muhammad Yusuf Khan. She had issue, two sons and three daughters - see Afghanistan (Asifi).
      • b) Mahbuba Begum [Mah Gul]. m. Colonel H.E. Sardar Ahmad 'Ali Khan (b. 1898), sometime Ambassador to Persia and Minister of the Royal Court, eldest son of General H.H. Sardar Muhammad Sulaiman Khan, sometime Governor of Herat and Badakhshan, by his wife, Taj Sultana Begum, daughter of Colonel Sardar Muhammad Yusuf Khan. She had issue, two sons - see Afghanistan (Asifi).
      • c) Halima Begum (d/o Masuma). m. at Kabul, August 1934, as his second wife, Colonel H.H. Sardar Ahmad Shah Khan (b. at Dehra Dun, 1889; d. 1951), sometime Minister of the Royal Court and ADC to the King, second son of H.E. Sardar Muhammad Asif Khan, sometime Chief Minister, by his second wife, Murwarid Begum, a Babakar Khel lady. She had issue, two sons and three daughters - see Afghanistan (Asifi).
      • d) Bilqis Laila Begum [Shah Koko] (d/o 'Abdu'l Salam Khan's daughter). mSardar Muhammad 'Abdu'l Qadir Khan Effendi, eldest son of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Ayub Khan, Amir of Herat, by his first wife, Kishwar Begum, daughter of Sardar Muhammad Aslam Khan. She had issue, one son and two daughters - see Afghanistan (Herat).
    • 2) Sardar Muhammad Kazim Khan. b. 1869 (s/o Ruqaiya Begum).
    • 3) Sardar Muhammad Yunus Khan. b. 1876 (s/o Ruqaiya Begum). Deported to Burma 1926. m. (first) Shirin Taj Begum, sixth daughter of Colonel Sardar Muhammad Yusuf Khan, by his third wife, Shams-i-Jahan Begum, daughter of Malik Ghulam Siddiq Khan. m. (second) Bibi Janat Nur. He d. before, 1937, having had issue, two sons and two daughters:

    • 4) Sardar 'Abdu'l Karim Khan (s/o the Herati consort). One of the leaders of the Mangal revolt of 1924-1925. Interned in India and Burma by the British authorities. m. Sultanat Begum, sixth daughter of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Ayub Khan, Amir of Herat, by his Herati consort. He committed suicide, at Khost, 1924, having had issue, an only son:
      • a) Sardar 'Abdu'l Razzaq Khan. b. 1922.
    • 5) Sardar 'Abdu'l 'Ali Khan. b. after 1876 (s/o Ruqaiya Begum). m. (first) Maryam Begum, ninth daughter of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Ayub Khan, Amir of Herat, by his Kandahari consort. m. (second) a daughter of Sher Ahmad Khan. He had issue, one son and four daughters:

December 1983, Sardar Muhammad Humayun Khan (b. at Dera Dun, India, 21st November 1946), Chair & MD Pegasus International in Lahore, elder son of Brigadier Sardar Ismail Khan (s/o Gawar Taj). m. Maryam Begum, daughter of Sardar ‘Abdu’l Rahman Khan. She had issue, one son and one daughter - see Afghanistan (Herat).

    • 6) Sardar Muhammad Nabi Khan. He had issue, two daughters:

      • a) Sardar Muhammad Osman. b. at Dehra Dun, 1925, educ. St. Joseph's Acad., Dehra Dun. Project Mngr. Fhillmand Valley Authority in Afghanistan for a period of over five years, returned to Dehra Dun in 1953 and later joined the Oil and Gas Commission of India, retired as a Geophysicist in 1983. He has produced over forty scientific papers concerning birds of prey and wildlife in general. Biologist, naturalist and expert on falconry, and author of "Falconry in the Land of the Sun: The Memoirs of an Afghan Falconer" (2003).
    • 8) Sardar 'Abdu'l Rahman Khan. b. after 1876 (s/o Nur Muhammad Khan's daughter). m. the eldest daughter of Sardar 'Abdu'l Rahman Khan, by his first wife, an Afghan lady. He had issue, seven sons and five daughters, including:
      • a) Sardar Nadir Khan. m. Maliha Begum, daughter of Sardar Amanu'llah Khan Durrani, by his wife, Bilqis Begum, daughter of Sardar 'Abdu'l Rahim Khan.
      • a) Zahra Begum. mSardar Muhammad Afzal Khan (b. 1912), elder son of Sardar Muhammad Akram Khan, by his wife, a daughter of Sardar Muhammad 'Ali Khan - see Afghanistan (Herat).
      • b) Maryam Begum. m. Brigadier Sardar Muhammad Ismail Khan, late PASC, sometime actg GOC 15th Infantry Dvsn, younger son of Sardar Muhammad Akram Khan, by his third wife, Gawar Taj alias Bibi-ko. She had issue, two sons- see Afghanistan (Herat).
      • c) Tahira Begum. mSardar Muhammad 'Ali Khan, son of Sardar 'Abdu'l 'Ali Khan, by his second wife, a daughter of Sher Ahmad Khan - see above.
    • 9) Sardar 'Abdu'llah Khan [Prince Abdulla]. b. after 1876 (s/o Nur Muhammad Khan’s daughter). Implicated in the Mangal revolt of 1924-1925, he was arrested and deported to Meiktila in Burma 1926, but later allowed to settle in Jabalpur. m. (first) Shamsi Jan [Shah Koko], daughter of H.E. Sardar Muhammad Hashim Khan, sometime Governor of Kandahar and Kurram, by his wife, Durkhane Begum. m. (second) an English lady. He had issue, two (or three) sons and two (or three) daughters:
      • a) Sardar Amanu'llah Khan Durrani. m. Bilqis Begum, fifth daughter of his paternal uncle, Sardar Abdul Rahim Khan. He had issue, one son and four daughters:

Alia Begum, younger daughter of Sardar Abdul Aziz Khan, of Herat, by his wife, Sultanat Begum, daughter of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Yaqub Khan, Amir of Afghanistan.
      • a) Shirin Begum. mSardar Abdul Rauf Khan, only son of her paternal uncle, Sardar Abdul Rahim Khan. She had issue, one son and one daughter - see below.
